Hyundai has crash-landed at the LA AutoMobility Show, leaving behind a massive crater.

They have unveiled a new concept compact SUV based on the car maker’s off-road XRT line, which will ensure you get to your next adventure. The Hyundai Crater, however, looks nearly as indestructible as the Toyota Hilux.

Now it may look as if the vehicle has been copied and pasted from a Halo video game. Still, many considerations have gone into its design. The exterior design theme is the Impact of Adventure, which claims that the exterior is shaped to be “rugged and capable” and “reflects the landscape that it’s inspired by”. Now I don’t know what mountain looks like, a geometric SUV, but then again, I’ve never seen the mountains in Korea, where this car is developed.

Despite this, stripping back the pretentious mumbo jumbo that designers love, I agree that the design does communicate a sense of strength, resilience and purpose.

But the true beauty of this vehicle’s design lies in its built-in recovery hooks. Now, how can you really change the design of a recovery hook, but Hyundai have only gone and made it a bottle opener.

Long gone are the days when you drive out into the wilderness with nothing but a few bottles of beer, and out of everything, you forget your bottle opener. Because now, you get to drive into the wilderness in your bottle opener.

But the car is kitted out with a lot more than just bottle openers. It features a customisable interface, a dynamic head-up display, and even a “crash pad” with ambient lighting. Which is all very high-tech and futuristic, and hopefully won’t fail you when you’re out in the wilderness, hundreds of miles from any signs of civilisation.

No specific details have been released about the car’s actual specs. Still, it’ll likely have similar specs to the recently announced Hyundai Ioniq 6 N, with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain and 641 bhp.

Either way, the Crater is something we are all interested in, as it nails the cyberpunk aesthetic, unlike the Tesla Cybertruck. But we’ll definitely keep an eye on the Crater as more information comes out.
