Smart, the creators of the adult cosy coupe, are currently testing their innovative electric compact architecture. This comes as the company moves towards all-electric models, surprising everyone who had already expected them to be fully electric.

The company is hoping to implement this technology into the Smart #2, which is destined to replace the Fortwo, at its world premiere in 2026.

The brand is set on maintaining the Fortwo’s tiny city dimensions, testing their new system on existing Fortwo bodies, guaranteeing that they can stay true to the original ultra-compact styling.

The brand claims it’s ready to reinvent the Fortwo, building the design around the car’s core DNA, being a two-door, two-seater compact car, but that they’re ready to drastically change how we perceive it. This includes a full redesign of the interior and exterior, led by the Mercedes-Benz design team. I’m just hoping it doesn’t look like Aston Martin’s Cygnet.

The eclectic compact architecture provides the foundation for a next-generation electric drivetrain, an unparalleled urban driving experience and advanced safety features, which is essential when you need to fit 20 clowns in this commercial clown car.

Many tests are ongoing worldwide to ensure the best results. In China, engineers are focused on core driving dynamics, refining the ride and agility for city landscapes, verifying structural strength, and optimising brake system performance.

The new Smart #2 is therefore on track for its debut in late 2026, where Smart are hoping it’ll set the new benchmark for city cars, which is definitely a challenging task when you’re going head to head with the V8 Cygnet.
