Volunteer Contributor Terms and Conditions

Group-B (the “Publisher”, “we”, “us”) is operated by Daniel Boland. These terms apply to anyone who volunteers to write for the Publisher (the “Contributor”, “you”). By claiming an article, pitching a story or submitting any work, you agree to them.

1. Volunteer status

1.1 You are contributing on an unpaid, voluntary basis. You will not receive payment, fees or expenses unless we agree otherwise in writing before you incur them.

1.2 Nothing in these terms creates an employment, worker, partnership or agency relationship between you and us. You are free to stop contributing at any time, and we are free to stop accepting your work.

1.3 We do not guarantee that any pitch will be accepted or that any piece will be published.

2. Claiming and pitching stories

2.1 When you claim an article, you are agreeing to write it by the due date shown. If you cannot meet the deadline, tell us as soon as possible so we can reassign it.

2.2 If a due date passes without a draft or an agreed extension, we may return the article to the pool and offer it to another contributor.

2.3 If you pitch your own story, we may accept it, decline it, change the angle, or assign it to another contributor. Submitting a pitch does not give you any rights over the idea or guarantee you the commission.

3. Your work must be original and lawful

3.1 You confirm that any work you submit:

  • is your own original work and has not been copied from any other source;
  • has not been published elsewhere, and is not being offered elsewhere, unless we have agreed otherwise;
  • does not infringe anyone’s copyright, trade mark, privacy or other rights;
  • is accurate, and any factual claims have been checked against reliable sources;
  • is not defamatory, discriminatory, threatening, obscene or otherwise unlawful.

3.2 Quotes and facts taken from other sources must be attributed, and you must not reproduce substantial parts of other people’s work.

3.3 You must not submit text that is wholly or mainly generated by artificial intelligence unless we have agreed to it in advance. Using AI tools for light assistance such as spell checking is fine, but you remain responsible for the accuracy and originality of everything you submit.

3.4 Images, video, audio and graphics may only be supplied if you own them or have written permission for us to use them in the ways described in section 4. Tell us the source and licence of anything you supply.

4. Ownership of copyright

4.1 In return for the opportunity to be published, you assign to us, with full title guarantee, all copyright and other intellectual property rights in the work you submit to us (including drafts, final versions and any images or other material you create for it) for the full period of copyright, anywhere in the world. This is a present assignment of future rights, so it applies automatically to each piece you submit from the moment it is created.

4.2 As owner, we may use, edit, adapt, translate, republish, license and sell the work in any form or medium, whether now existing or developed in future. This includes our website, social media, newsletters, print, syndication to other publishers, and sponsored or commercial content.

4.3 You will not publish the work elsewhere, or allow anyone else to, without our written permission. We will normally allow you to link to the published article and to include it in a personal portfolio, and you may show it to prospective employers or clients.

4.4 You agree to sign any further documents and do anything else reasonably needed to confirm or record our ownership.

5. Credit and moral rights

5.1 We will normally publish the article with your name as the author, in the form you tell us you prefer. We may use a pseudonym or omit your name where there is a legitimate reason, such as legal advice or your own request.

5.2 You waive, to the fullest extent permitted by law, your moral rights in the work. This includes the right to object to derogatory treatment of the work, and any right to be identified as author where a byline cannot reasonably be given (for example in short social media extracts). This does not affect our intention to credit you as set out in 5.1.

6. Editing

6.1 We may edit, shorten, retitle, reformat and rewrite your work for style, length, accuracy, legal reasons or house standards, with or without consulting you.

6.2 We will try to tell you about significant changes before publication where there is time, but we are not obliged to seek your approval.

6.3 We may decide not to publish a piece, or to withdraw or update it after publication, at our discretion.

7. Removal requests

7.1 If you would like a published article removed or amended, ask us in writing at groupbtelevision@gmail.com and explain why.

7.2 We will consider each request on its merits, taking into account the reason given, any legal or privacy concerns, and the effect on the Publisher. We may agree, partly agree or decline. Where an article is syndicated or has been printed, we may not be able to remove copies already distributed.

7.3 We will remove or amend content where required by law.

8. Conduct and responsibilities

8.1 You will act professionally when representing the Publisher, including when contacting interviewees, brands and organisations. You must not claim to be an employee or official representative of the Publisher unless we agree in writing.

8.2 You must disclose any conflict of interest relevant to a piece, such as a financial or personal link to a manufacturer, dealer or person you are writing about.

8.3 You must not accept gifts, payments or other benefits in exchange for coverage. Where you receive a loaned vehicle, tickets or hospitality for a review or event, you must tell us before publication so that we can disclose it to readers.

8.4 You must follow the law and any reasonable safety or legal instructions we give, including on road tests, filming and press events.

9. Your personal information

9.1 We collect your name, email address, phone number and any other details you give us when you claim articles or pitch stories. We use them to manage assignments, contact you about your work, credit you, and run the volunteer programme.

9.2 We will not sell your details. We store them securely and will only share them where needed to run the Publisher (for example with our publishing platform or editors) or where the law requires.

9.3 You can ask to see, correct or delete your personal information by emailing groupbtelevision@gmail.com. Please see our privacy policy at https://group-b.co.uk/privacy-policy/ for further details, including how long we keep your information and your rights under UK data protection law.

10. Ending your involvement

10.1 You may stop contributing at any time by telling us. You should finish or hand back any article you have claimed.

10.2 We may end your involvement at any time, for any reason, including breach of these terms.

10.3 Ending your involvement does not affect rights we already hold in work you have submitted. Sections 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9 continue after you stop contributing.

11. Liability

11.1 Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence or for fraud.

11.2 You are responsible for any loss we suffer because you broke the promises in section 3, for example if a piece you submit infringes someone’s copyright or is defamatory.

11.3 We are not responsible for your own costs, expenses or loss of opportunity in connection with volunteering.

12. General

12.1 We may update these terms from time to time. The version in force when you claim an article or submit a pitch applies to that piece, and we will tell you if we make material changes.

12.2 If any part of these terms is found to be unenforceable, the rest continues to apply.

12.3 These terms, together with any guidance we give you in writing, are the whole agreement between us about your volunteering.

12.4 These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute.

Agreement

By ticking the agreement box on our claim or pitch form, or by submitting work to us, you confirm that you have read and agree to these terms.
